You are making a garden notebook, not racing to grow a plant. Today is for preparing, looking closely and choosing what to check later.

Our two play stops

  1. 10 min

    Seed scientist

Set up the seed activity with a grown-up, following its guide. Describe the seed as it is today and draw one detail. Decide when you will look again; a sprout does not have to appear during this session.

    Gather before playing

    • 2 clear cups
    • 2 large bean seeds
    • 2 paper towels
    • water
    • a paper diary or the on-screen diary

    The grown-up’s role

Handle the seeds with your child, keep them away from younger siblings and pets, and discard the experiment if mold appears. These seeds are for observing, not eating.

  2. 12 min

    Pattern garden

Build a short repeating pattern in Pattern garden. Say the rule aloud, then let the child change one part and explain the new rule. A pattern on the screen is not a prediction of how a plant will grow.

    Gather before playing

    • Pattern garden on this device
    • paper and crayons, only if you want to draw

    The grown-up’s role

Ask what the child notices before naming the rule. Leave the invented row entirely to them.

Lila and the Garden Song

Read a chapter from Lila’s garden story. Notice the difference between an invented garden and the real seed you are observing.

A gentle finish

Keep the dated drawing beside your observation spot. Choose one thing to look at next time, without guessing the result for the child.

One question to share

What could stay the same when we look again, and what might change?

Change the pace

Start with an AB pattern and two colours. For a challenge, invent a rule with three parts or draw the seed without naming it.
