  2. 2Notice it nearby, imagine it or press play for the optional example. There is no microphone.

✺

why it helps

A shared chance to try words for a texture, gap or repeated sound, with pictures and imagined ideas as equal ways to play.

make it fit your child

One game, three levels

Start where it feels comfortable and change the challenge whenever curiosity changes.

MAKE IT EASIER

Choose one picture. Let the child point, watch or imagine; no spoken answer or generated sound is needed.

TRY A NEXT STEP

Arrange two pretend sound ideas into a little story, leaving a pause between them.

a small discovery together

A safari without a loudness challenge

A paper rustle, a small tap or a quiet pause can start a conversation. Choose one card or several; stay somewhere comfortable and let the child point, speak, imagine or pass.

  1. 01

    Choose one small place

Sit together in a familiar space. You do not need silence, a timer or a walk. Start with one picture.

  2. 02

    Notice, look or imagine

An adult may fold clean paper or lightly tap a large wooden block. A drawing or an imagined example works just as well.

  3. 03

Borrow a word, then change roles

Try “tap-tap”, “a gap” or the child’s own word. Offer to copy their idea. You may finish after one card.

Paper

An adult slowly folds one clean sheet. You can look at the fold or imagine a paper leaf instead.

Is your idea a tiny rustle or something else?

Wooden tap

Touch a large wooden block lightly with one finger. Pointing at the picture is another way to join.

Would your story use one tap or a few?

Drops

Look through a closed window if rain is there. Otherwise imagine drops on a leaf; no water is needed.

What marks could show your imagined drops?

Little steps

An adult can walk two fingers across a table. You can trace the path in the picture without moving around.

Where might the pretend steps be going?

A chime

Imagine a tiny bell in a story, or point to the lines around the drawing. You do not need a real bell.

Could your story leave a gap after the chime?

A pause

Leave a space between two pretend sounds. You can hold a finger still or just look at the picture.

What might come after your pause?
